Optimal Energy Surplus
I'm interested to know what everyone uses for a caloric surplus when bulking such as to optimize lean gains while minimizing residual fat.
I know that the general bro rule of thumb is +500 calories, but that makes absolutely no sense when you can have a 160lb lifter and a 210lb lifter. It needs to be percentage based.
Lyle McDonald suggests 16-18 calories per lbs of body weight for bulking, which is roughly a 20% surplus, but that seems a bit aggressive. Mike Matthews' site suggests a 10% caloric surplus. What is the best percentage recommendation based on your personal experiences?
